H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid
Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy
African Union

Dr Amani Abou-Zeid is an international development expert with extensive knowledge of Africa at both the strategic and operational levels. For more than 30 years she has served in leadership roles at international organisations, such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), UNDP and USAID, with a focus on infrastructure and energy programmes. She currently serves OIC Director of the African Natural Resources Center at the AfDB, an innovative non-lending organ of the Bank, which assists African governments in the good governance and effective and inclusive management of natural resources – both renewable and non-renewable.

Over her career, Dr Abou-Zeid has amassed a mix of experiences from across Africa, France, UK and Canada. She has managed large and complex development programmes (mainly in infrastructure), including the largest operations portfolio of the AfDB (USD 8 billion); forged strategic partnerships, for example, establishing AfDB as Morocco’s premier development partner and donor when she was serving as AfDB Resident Representative to the country; and successfully contributed to resource mobilization efforts, such as replenishing the AfDB’s concessional windows for low-income African countries and engineering a financial carve-out for regional integration.

Dr Abou-Zeid speaks French, English, Arabic and Spanish. She is a trained telecommunications engineer with an MBA in project management from the French University for African Development (Université Senghor), a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University and Ph.D. in Social and Economic Development from University of Manchester, UK. She also has a degree in Arts from Université Sorbonne-Paris IV.

Dr Abou-Zeid has received numerous international awards and recognitions for her leadership and excellence, including being selected as one of Africa’s 50 Most Influential Women, being decorated with the Wissam Alaouite by HM King Mohamed VI of Morocco, and being recognised as a World Young Leader by the European Union and as a Personnalité d’Avenir by Republic of France.
